Mention Teen Love to some people and they smile,
it can’t be real love, its called Puppy Love, they
say. The people that usually say these kinds of things are generally older and
have forgotten what it’s like to be young and in love, perhaps for the first
time.
Remembering my own first love at the age of 15, I can hear those same or similar
comments to this day; I ended up married to that first love for over 25 years.
Don’t listen to the naysayer's; love is love at what ever age it happens to meet
us. While few expect teen love to last a lifetime; which hardly makes it less
real, half or more of all adult love doesn't last a lifetime either.
That having been said, there are some very important steps and
ground rules that must be put into place, steps that will ensure our journey into adulthood is an easier and more fulfilling trip. Whether we are dealing with
popularity issues, peer pressure, ambition, or ambivalence, we all need life
strategies to help us stay afloat. Setting the parameters on how you will progress through a
relationship when a teenager is a little different to how you go about it as an
adult.
As an adult you have acquired some life skills and have learned
to cope and hopefully not repeat past errors of judgement in relationships. As a
teenager we have no, or very little, experience to draw on and we need to decide
how we want to be treated in a relationship – what type of behaviour we will and
will not accept, what type of person we are attracted to and of course how to
say NO and mean it.
And it’s OK not to be dating, even if ALL your friends are,
don’t just date anyone for the sake of keeping your friends happy and to not
appear different or think that you’re unattractive, we are all unique and
blossom at different stages, what might be right for your friends doesn’t mean
that it’s right for you.
Change your focus from wanting to date for the sake of dating, start getting
passionate about you and what you want to get out of life. There are many
Teenage Advice web sites out there and some great books too.
As in all relationships, good communication is very important to
the longevity of that relationship. Teenagers have a great creative capacity,

Here is my Favourite pick of the Teen Love Poems in this section (first line): "O, would I were a boy again,"
When Youth's passionate pulses fade,
And his golden heart beats slow,
When across the infinite sky
I see the roseate glow
Of my last, last sunset flare,
I shall send my thoughts to this night
And remember you as I die,
The one thing, among all the things of this earth, found fair.
How sweet you were in your sleep,
With the starlight, silver and sable, across your hair! Memory - translated by: Laurence Hope - 1865 - 1904
She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss. Forever wilt
thou love and she be fair. Ode on a Grecian Urn - John Keats
Nay, tarry a moment, my charming girl;
Here is a jewel of gold and pearl;
A beautiful cross it is I ween
As ever on beauty's breast was seen;
There's nothing at all but love to pay;
Take it and wear it, but only stay!
Ah! Sir Hunter, what excellent taste!
I'm not--in such--particular--haste. The Hunter and the Milkmaid – John Godfrey Saxe – 1816 – 1887
If all the world and love were young,
And truth in every shepherd's tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move
To live with thee, and be thy love. The Nymph's Reply to the Passionate Shepherd – Sir Walter
Raleigh
It was the kind of desperate, headlong, adolescent calf love
that he should have experienced years ago and got over. Agatha Christie
Long as the year’s dull circle seems to run
When the brisk minor pants for twenty-one. Imitations of Horace - A. Pope
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very Heaven! The Prelude - William Wordsworth
O Life! how pleasant in thy
morning,
Young Fancy’s rays the hills adorning!
Cold-pausing Caution’s lesson scorning,
We frisk away,
Like school-boys at th’ expected warning,
To joy and play. Epistle To James Smith - Robert Burns
O, would I were a boy again,
When life seemed formed of sunny years,
And all the heart then knew of pain
Was wept away in transient tears! O, Would I Were A Boy Again - M. Lemon
This morning, like the spirit of a youth
That means to be of note, begins betimes. Antony and Cleopatra, - William Shakespeare
